James Liu, an associate with FactorLaw since 2016, concentrates his practice in bankruptcy and commercial litigation. He supports FactorLaw’s full spectrum practice, and has helped to represent debtors, creditors (corporate and consumer), and bankruptcy trustees in state and federal courts.
Before joining FactorLaw, James clerked for the Honorable Jack B. Schmetterer, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Illinois. While in law school at the University of Illinois, James worked as a research assistant for Professors Hurd and Brubaker, assisting an expert in philosophy and law and an expert in bankruptcy on a project about the philosophical underpinnings of debt forgiveness for consumer debtors. He also worked as a research assistant for Professor Tabb, whose Law of Bankruptcy is the Hornbook Series single-volume comprehensive treatise on bankruptcy law. In the summer of 2012, he served as extern to the Honorable Arthur L. Alarcón of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
James is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute. Away from his professional life, James volunteers for the Logan Square Farmers Market and is a races road and cyclocross for The Chainlink, a forum dedicated to cycling advocacy in Chicago. In 2016, James raced in the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships in Portland, Oregon.
